 Follow-up, "Black Snake Moan," Brewer has pulled out all the stops in his quest for a hit. His film is an outrageous concoction of bondage sexploitation and sanctimonious interracial personal redemption unseen in the movies since the days of Cecil B. DeMille.
It's hard to know what to make of the thing, though it has a sleazy charm, it's never boring and it goes a certain distance on Samuel L. Jackson's conviction. Except for the interracial nature of most of the sex, it plays like a spiced-up version of "Tobacco Road."
