Students debate connotations of interracial dating

Andrea Espinoza, ‘11, remembers living in New York City, where she once witnessed a black man walking with a white woman. For three blocks, every single black woman stared at him. She said it wasn’t uncommon for strangers to yell at or even chase couples down the street.

Espinoza’s story was one of many told on Sunday, when dozens of students came together to discuss interracial dating at the UMOJA house.

Several students defined interracial dating differently.

Some students say interracial dating is when there is a visible difference between a couple. However, others argue that it is difficult to tell someone’s race just by looking at them.

A new poll by the Pew Research Center shows that 54 percent of those surveyed see improved race relations since President Obama took office. So how has that affected interracial relationships.
Obama’s parents met in 1960 in a Russian language class at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, where his father was a foreign student on scholarship.

Interracial dating still not accepted

Although attitudes surrounding intercultural and interracial dating may have improved in recent years, there are still hardships that many have to face in choosing their partners. Thursday, the Ohio State Multicultural Center took on this issue by orchestrating an open discussion about dating, race and culture. Elizabeth Warren, Intercultural Specialist at the MCC, said that people should discuss highly personal issues more often. “We are in a place in our world and culture where we need to create a space for open dialogue,” she said. During the dialogue on Thursday, students discussed a variety of issues, from society’s views on interracial dating to how families put pressure on their children to date within their culture or race.
